Highway Breakdown Safety
When you break down on a highway, follow these steps to stay safe:
1. Get Off the Road If Possible
If your car still moves, pull to the right shoulder as far as possible. Aim for an exit ramp, rest area, or wide shoulder. The further from traffic, the safer you are.
2. Turn on Hazard Lights
Immediately activate your hazard lights. At night, turn on interior lights too so other drivers can see your vehicle.
3. Stay in Your Vehicle
Unless there is immediate danger (fire, smoke), stay inside your car with your seatbelt fastened. Your vehicle protects you from passing traffic. Move to the passenger side if possible.
4. Call for Help
Call MSP Towing & Recovery at (651) 371-6105. Give your exact location — highway name, direction of travel, and nearest mile marker or exit. We dispatch immediately.
DO on Highways:
- Stay in vehicle with seatbelt on
- Keep hazard lights running
- Note mile markers and exits
- Use flares/triangles if you have them
- Wait for professional help
DON'T on Highways:
- Walk along the highway
- Stand behind your vehicle
- Try to make repairs in traffic
- Cross traffic lanes
- Accept rides from strangers
Our Highway Response
Highway breakdowns are dangerous. We prioritize them. Our 30 minutes average response time is even faster for highway emergencies when possible.
Why we respond faster on highways:
- Strategic truck positioning — we station trucks near major interchanges
- Highway-capable equipment — flatbeds and heavy-duty trucks ready
- Experienced drivers — who know how to safely work on highway shoulders
- Priority dispatch — highway calls are flagged for immediate response
Common Highway Breakdown Causes
Flat Tires & Blowouts
High speeds and road debris cause many highway flats. Our tire change service gets you back on the road. If you do not have a spare, we tow you to the nearest tire shop.
Overheating
Summer heat and stop-and-go traffic cause engines to overheat. Do not keep driving — you will cause serious engine damage. Pull over and call for towing to a repair shop.
Running Out of Fuel
It happens more than you would think. Our fuel delivery service brings gas or diesel to your location so you do not have to walk to a gas station.
Accidents
After an accident, once everyone is safe and you have contacted police, call us for accident recovery and towing. We work with insurance companies and can tow to your preferred shop.
Winter Conditions
Minnesota winters make highways treacherous. Ice, snow, and reduced visibility cause spinouts and slideoffs. Our winching service extracts vehicles from ditches and snowbanks.
About MnDOT FIRST Patrol
You may see yellow MnDOT FIRST trucks on Twin Cities highways. They provide free assistance for minor issues (flat tires, jump starts) but do not provide towing. They operate limited hours (6 AM - 8 PM weekdays primarily).
For 24/7 assistance, towing, or times when FIRST is not available, call MSP Towing & Recovery at (651) 371-6105.

Get transparent pricing before we dispatch. Local service means faster response and drivers who know every highway in the metro.
